Without further ado

Necklace

Rain fell on the fields of desolate earth coating the piles of dirt and the columns of stone tablets. The drops of water shattered on impact with the cold ground causing no place untouched by the wet assault. Winds pushed the rain towards the on lookers, splattering against tear soaked cheeks and sniffling noses. Water pooled on every inch of each face only to overflow individual features and stream down reddened chins. Garbs of black cracked like whips as the winds indiscriminately rushed over and around grey soaked grave stones. Lace clumped and stuck to any who dared bear its likeness. Skin not covered turned iridescent with the cold elements stealing their natural hues and pulling the liveliness out of the flock of people.

A boy stood at the foot of a carved wooden crate, his hands shaking as he reached for the stained casket. The necklace hanging from his open hand defied gravity, pulling itself slightly upwards from the point which it’s glimmering stone met silvery metal links. His puffy eyes squinted when rain splashed against his crystalline face, his tears indistinguishable with the thick rains.

A woman’s sob broke through the howling tempest, ringing in the ears of all the slack shouldered funeral patrons. Collapsing to her knees, the woman’s arms raised to sky, her voice cracking while she bargained with the blackened clouds.

A man hooked his hands underneath the woman’s arms and lifted her back to her feet. Pulling her close, the man grasped the back of her head and buried it into his soaked chest. His head oscillated consistently with every passing second, his blue lips quivered as he looked for words of conviction but failed to find any suiting.

The boy looked around at all the patrons, particularly the couple standing closest to him. His voice yet to mature choked on the two syllable word he attempted to say through torrents of water running across his face. Sorry he thought, sorry, sorry, I- I’m so sorry, even though his thoughts shone clearly his physical form failed to project anything articulate. Stepping to the front of the casket, he bewildered at the porcelain form of an angel whose eyes were to remain permanently shut, never to grace the world again.

Removing herself from the embrace, the woman walked to the boy crowding the glass window and wrenched at the back of his muddied shirt. The boy Slide across the ground causing an arching wave to spray across already drenched earth.

The man stepped over the battered boy and reached for two red valves on the opposing side of the casket. As the knobs were twisted a rush of mist shot from beneath the casket, initiating a slow descent into a doleful hole.

Opposing the direction of the casket, the boy rose from the forsaken ground. His hands clenched the floating crystal chain and his lips diligently attempted to place words to the situation. Unable to will his body to do his bidding the boy took a step towards the masses. One foot fell in front of the other, creating pooled water to erupt outwards from the contours of his bare feet. Before he could state his final goodbye the boy was cutting through the hordes of people, rolling as he bumped into the lower halves of fellow spectators.

Finally escaping the last line of black dressed folks, the boy’s legs never stopped pumping against the paved road. The sounds of bare skin slapping against the stoned path drowned out with the dreary rain and snarling winds. One overwhelming thought echoed passed the vacancy of the boy’s mind as he blasted between a set of spiked gates.

Where did it go wrong?
